EXETER, NH, February 7, 2017 – Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals (Madonna) has received the Vapotherm Center of Excellence designation for their use of Vapotherm’s technology in their ventilator and tracheostomy weaning protocols. This designation is the highest recognition a facility can receive from Vapotherm, and signifies that the facility uses Vapotherm technology as standard of care in their facility.
Madonna began using Vapotherm in January 2016 to provide humidification to their tracheostomy patients. Tracheostomy patients are typically unable to humidify on their own which often results in thick and retained secretions in the lower airway. Vapotherm’s heated humidification improves mucocilliary function and mobilization of secretions, helping the patient breathe more easily and accelerating the ventilator and tracheostomy weaning process.
“When the Vapotherm heated humidification technology presented itself to us, there was no question that this is something we needed to implement to be able to provide the highest standard of care for these patients,” remarked Madonna’s Respiratory Director Jim Pelton.
Since the implementation of Vapotherm, Madonna has seen a 17% increase in their decannulation (removal of the tracheostomy tube) rate. Patients that are able to be decannulated and resume breathing through their upper airway have greater discharge options, such as their home. “We are incredibly proud to award Madonna our Center of Excellence designation. Their commitment to innovation, and most importantly, patient care, is truly remarkable,” stated Joe Army, President and CEO of Vapotherm.
